6 REASONS YOU NEED A SIDE HUSTLE !

I've learnt about having a side hustle since I was younger, from watching family members juggle one job and another. For example, my mama na teacher (shoutout to all our teachers out there!) and she had a shop on the side where she did other businesses...that's what a side hustle is (part time job while doing a full time job). Not everyone feels the need for a side hustle, but if you've been thinking about it: then here are more reason's why 2015 is the year to start!

Focus: You won’t have time to be merry-go-rounding in your life. You see, an idle mind is the devils workshop and an idle mind with mobile phone, internet and bb will cause much chaos. Do have those friends that ping you and always seem to be so available for a “random” chat? I’m not saying idle chat is bad oh, but idle chat everyday is not why we are here. Get busy. Get a side hustle.

New Skills: You will learn a new skill, most of the time our side hustle will be in something totally different or quite complimentary with your 9-5. Doing this on the side will help you build skills that will be useful in your job and outside your job. You will learn to prioritise and multitask. No knowledge is lost.

Extra Cash: This is the most important reason sha but I didn't want to come off as a money lover. by placing it as number 1 plus some people have too much money so they do it because of "just because". LOL. You don’t have to wait for that alert you get ONCE at the end of every month from your 9-5…having extra on the side can help out with things like going out on weekends, holidays, paying for asoebi, and all the miscellaneous things we spend our money on. That extra cash can fluctuate to be more or less than the salary you earn at your 9-5. Imagine those days when you actually make double your salary from your side hustle. Godwin!

Security: Incase of "incasity" what happens? People with side hustles are not afraid of losing their jobs, not because they don’t really like their job or because they play with their jobs but because there is a plan B. A plan B gives peace of mind. What if your company cannot afford all it’s staff? What if they just have to let you go? What if no salary for 3 months…how you go do? Side hustle.

New Career: I know so many people who have left their 9-5’s for their side hustle. Doctor’s becoming photographers, engineers becoming caterers...it’s happening. It’s hard to make the decision to follow your passion and leave a job. Because? Money. However, doing the side gig will help you determine if you really want to take the leap or if you should just fogerraboudit. Most of the time our side hustle is a little hobby of ours, something we are passionate about, but when it begins to become more fulfilling, emotionally and most importantly FINANCIALLY, people don’t hesitate to jump ship.

Fulfillment: I do think people who have side hustles are more fulfilled in life. I once read somewhere that “Multiple interests are how you create a happy life. Also, just the awareness that you are building something on your own, gives your self esteem a boost!

I love when you people interact with me, so I want to know why you started your side hustle. What are the rewards you get?

  8. You're so right Sisi Yemmie. There's nothing like having a Plan B especially when it's something you're passionate about (You know those times in Naija when it was difficult to convince your parents to let you build a career around 'some passions' due to their seeming 'non-professionalism' hehehe)
Hoping a lot of people will see your article and be inspired to take that bold step towards starting their side hustle. No one knows tomorrow :) A miracle happens when opportunity meets preparation ;)

    1. Most things that hold us back is money, you can figure out a way to go about that, depends on the hustle you can ask that the client pay a deposit to enable you deliver, or you can look for other stuff that might not initially need money

    1. Hello dear, I'm not an expert and I totally empathize with you regarding the mainland/island traffic (I go through it everyday of the week!). I have been married for slightly over a year, waiting on the Lord for children and also have been working for about 10 months at my job..:). I will like to advise that you seek the face of God concerning what business to do and then think about what exactly you love to do/passionate about that can make profit- more like a "profit-making hobby". You can even start it on the side (as a side-hustle) before you finally quit your job. But unless you are absolutely clear about quitting your job and/or maybe you conceive and the stress is getting too much, please do not quit in a haste, we all need steady incomes especially in a marriage. As for me, I'm trying to take my own advice..lol! And hopefully you are getting enough experience at your job which would be useful to you later in life. One other thing is to write down any ideas you have and try to look through them as often as possible to keep the vision alive. It is well with us and I truly pray for the best for us. Amen. Do take care..xx
P.s-Sorry for the epistle but I felt the need to reach out to 'my kindred'.

  35. Side hustle aka multiple income streams. Why did I start my side hustles? Tbh everything started like play like play. More like hobbies and then I realised people are willing to pay for them and voila! income.

Luckily for me, my side hustles (copy editing, graphics design, business/event consulting) are somewhat related so one almost always leads to a job in another. This year though I've decided to remove some and add others. I'm so in love with the versatility of ankara materials and I'm trying to see how creative I can get.

I always tell the kids I mentor that I don't need a job. I might not be the richest entrepreneur (yet), but I'll always have enough to take care of me and my dependents.

  42. For some reason, I just found your blog and I'm loving it!
My dear, side hustle is compulsory o. One of the keys to financial success is multiple streams of income.
I've had a side hustle for as long as I can remember- In medical school,I started making jewelry, then progressed to making bags then eventually settled into making pretty soft furnishing items. I ALWAYS had money in my pocket so much that at some point I stopped calling home for money-my papa fear sef.lool.
After school, I discovered a love for baking and started up a viable business doing that on the side until this year when I finally had to make the decision to choose between my career and my businesses because it was becoming increasingly difficult to manage both, then marriage got thrown into the mix! Naturally I chose my side hustle(s) o!! It was scary,so much that less than 3 months in, I wanted to run back to work. It's so funny that it was at that point that I was now getting job offers I didn't solicit for. Ah!Devil is a liar. Family too won't let me hear word. But 5 months in, I think its the best decision I ever made-financially and other wise.
To those thinking of how to start, my pocket money from uni days was all it took. You don't need to invest millions. I believe in starting small small. When I graduated, I used a portion of my salary to buy supplies and equipment and my jobs also provided a cushion so I almost never had to spend from my business money which kept being reinvested into itself. My hustle has in no way 'arrived' but when I think of its humble beginnings, I bless God!
My tory too long, not vex abeg
