So you want to start a YouTube channel? Whether it's for fun, passion, or business, I’m here to tell you that if I could do it, so can you! I have over one million subscribers now and did it over the span of 10 years, so you can do it too. YouTube changed my life, and I’m about to give you all the tea on how to get started the right way. Let’s go!
1. Pick Your Niche (AKA What Will You Talk About?)
Before anything, you need to decide what your channel will be about. It should be something you actually enjoy because, trust me, consistency is key! Some popular niches include:
Lifestyle & Vlogs – Take your audience along with you!
Food & Cooking – If you love to cook, share your recipes!
Parenting & Motherhood – Mums, let’s talk about this journey!
Beauty & Fashion – Makeup tutorials, hauls, styling tips.
Education & How-To – Teach people something valuable.
The key is to pick a niche that excites you so that creating content won’t feel like a chore.
2. Create Your YouTube Channel
Log into YouTube with your Google account.
Click on your profile and select "Create a Channel."
Pick a catchy channel name (it could be your name or something unique).
Upload a profile picture and banner that represents your brand.
Write an "About" section that lets people know what your channel is about.
3. Plan Your Content (Don’t Just Wing It!)
Listen, having a plan makes everything easier! Decide what kind of videos you’ll create. Some ideas:
Vlogs – Take people behind the scenes of your life.
How-To & Tutorials – Teach people a skill (e.g., cooking, parenting, beauty, etc.).
Reviews & Unboxings – Share your honest thoughts on products.
Q&A & Storytime – Talk about personal experiences.
I love having a content calendar—it helps me stay organized and consistent!
4. Get the Right Equipment (But Don’t Overthink It!)
Sis, you don’t need a fancy camera to start! Just use what you have.
Camera: Your smartphone is fine! Upgrade later.
Microphone: Sound is important. A clip-on mic works great.
Lighting: Natural light is your best friend, but a ring light helps too.
Editing Software: iMovie (Mac), CapCut (mobile), or Adobe Premiere Pro (if you’re fancy!).
5. Film & Edit Like a Pro
Find good lighting (facing a window works wonders!).
Speak clearly and naturally—don’t be shy!
Cut out awkward pauses, add text, and make your video fun to watch.
Use background music (royalty-free) to make it engaging.
6. Upload & Optimize for YouTube Search
When you upload your video, make sure people can find it:
Title: Use keywords (e.g., "How to Start a YouTube Channel in 2024").
Thumbnail: Eye-catching and bright!
Description: Add details, timestamps, and links.
Tags: Use relevant keywords.
7. Promote Like a Boss
Once your video is live, share it everywhere!
Post on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok—anywhere your audience is.
Engage with your viewers—reply to comments and ask questions.
Tell people to like, share, and subscribe (they need reminders!).
8. Be Consistent & Keep Improving
Growth takes time, so don’t be discouraged! Post regularly, learn from analytics, and keep improving your content.
9. Make Money on YouTube
When you hit 1,000 subscribers & 4,000 watch hours, you can start earning through:
Ads (YouTube Partner Program)
Brand Sponsorships
Affiliate Marketing
Selling Products (e.g., ebooks, merch)
Super Chats & Memberships
10. Just Start!
You’ve read all this, now what? Don’t overthink it—JUST START! Your first video won’t be perfect (mine wasn’t either!), but the more you do it, the better you’ll get.
