Making butter from cream is a simple process that you can easily do at home. Here are the steps:

Materials needed:
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • A mixing bowl
  • A stand mixer or hand mixer
  • A fine-mesh strainer (optional)
  • A jar or container with a tight-fitting lid

  1. Pour the heavy whipping cream into a mixing bowl. You can use as much or as little cream as you like, but keep in mind that it will reduce in volume as you churn it into butter.
  2. Begin to beat the cream with a stand mixer or hand mixer. Start on low speed and gradually increase to medium-high. You will notice the cream thickening and turning into whipped cream.
  3. Continue to beat the whipped cream until it begins to separate. The fat in the cream will begin to separate from the liquid, and the mixture will become grainy and buttery.
  4. Once you see the butter forming, you can stop the mixer. You can also use a fine-mesh strainer to separate the liquid (buttermilk) from the butter.
  5. Rinse the butter with cold water to remove any remaining buttermilk. This will help the butter last longer.
  6. Use a spatula to transfer the butter to a jar or container with a tight-fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.Note: You can also add salt to the butter for flavor, or even herbs or other seasonings for a unique taste.
