By now most of you have probably been to the Krispy Kreme stores in Lagos right? They have two stores currently, one at Ikeja City Mall and the second store at Bishop Aboyade Cole Street Victoria Island, Lagos. Upon entering any of the Krispy Kreme stores, you are greeted with a wide display counter of their beautiful doughnuts you can hardly resist. The display was full and tantalizing and you always feel you want to have it ALL but you think about your waistline.

I know a lot of people have gone on about how the Krispy Kreme doughnuts are too sweet, myself inclusive and I hoped there would be a low sugar variety which I am very happy that they have that now so I decided to give it a try.

Apparently, The Low sugar variety includes four different flavours: The proudly Nigerian Nutzy Crunchy Peanut Butter, Lightly Drizzled, Cinnamon Apple Pie and Powdered Strawberry.

I’m pleasantly surprised that doughnut can still have little amount of sugar and be really yummy. Here’s the rundown of the flavours I tried:

Cinnamon Apple Pie: The taste of apple and the cinnamon rolled into a doughnut is so refreshing! What a doughnut flavour! Firstly, the top of the doughnut is coated with cinnamon dusting typical of an apple pie dessert. Secondly, the doughnut is filled with a mixture of chopped apples and cinnamon. Everything about this doughnut was great . They have successfully translated Cinnamon apple pie into a doughnut! Don’t even get me started on the health benefits of cinnamon.

Lightly Drizzled: Imagine biting into a super-soft, fluffy doughnut just like the Signature Original glazed doughnut but with only a slight dash of glaze...instead of imagining, try it! The Lightly Drizzled is perfect for those who want more of the plain doughnuts taste.

Powdered Strawberry: These would remind you of the classic Nigerian strawberry jam doughnuts. Full of flavor, this doughnut is jam-packed with strawberry filling and dusted in powdered sugar. Feeling nostalgic? this doughnut is for you. What’s more, there’s plenty of filling inside, they sure weren’t stingy with the filling.

Crunchy Peanut: It’s amazing to know that this is made with the Nigerian Nutzy peanut butter. like a crunchy peanut bar, the top is decorated with small, crushed pieces of peanuts. The attendant actually mentioned this was one of their bestsellers.

So to sum up, I enjoyed the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts low sugar variety and it’s VERY worth a visit. Now I don’t feel so guilty about having a low sugar sweet treat as often as I would like to.
